In Her Eyes . . .

Her eyes,
once so beautiful and alive,
hold now only a plea,
rapidly fading into hopelessness
every day it goes unanswered.
She becomes trapped more desperately
every day she draws breath,
yet there is no one who can rescue her
from her perfect life.

She is the child who has everything,
the lovely princess
who holds the world in her palms,
yet no one notices that it has all slipped
between her fingers.
Her very presence,
so full of grace and elegance,
commands love and draws envy
from all who behold her eminence,
yet she cries out
silently in the darkness.

She knows she should be happy,
doesn't understand why she is dying from within.
Her heart aches,
but she knows not for what.
How can a girl,
so beautiful and perfect,
with everything within her delicate grasp,
be so completely withered inside her soul?

No matter how far lost she is though,
she realizes that she must continue to go numbly about her routine,
smiling and existing in happiness every day;
it is what is expected of her and she cares not anyway,
not anymore.
She died long ago;
she only breathes now for the sake of others,
knowing that in her faded heart
is the strength yet to breathe even without life.
She will always be able to smile and draw envy
despite her shadowed spirit so well concealed,
with only her eyes reflecting her silent plea
faded now to only a memory of a hope
long since given up.
