Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 - X-Box / PS2

What is it?
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2.  Well, if you know what the Need for Speed series is, then you know what this is.  If not, I’ll tell you here.  Need for Speed was always an Arcade Racer.  You got to drive the world’s most expensive cars around tracks that would realistically destroy the car for driving on it, much less crashing.  One thing set NFS apart from other Arcade Racers out there was Cops.  The ability to get busted put a new element into the game play that really boosted the fun factor of the game.  And it’s always been a pretty game to look at overall.  Another thing that made the NFS series stick out were alternate routs.  This is merely a continuation of the series, or better described, a sequel to the best of the series.  Need for Speed 3, Hot pursuit.  I have played the X-Box and PS2 versions of the game, and will note some of the differences when I come to them.  (I’ve heard the cube version, is identical to the X-Box, which is a direct port of the PC, but haven’t played either, so I can not vouch for that)

Control

The control on this game is Arcade, which means you can drive the cars obscenely fast, without worrying about it impacting your performance.  On PS2, the controls are the same as the original NFS games on PSX, with X for gas Square for brake/reverse, and Circle for Hand Brake.  On X-box, you can opt to put the Gas, and brake/reverse onto the L and R buttons.  I would suggest it actually, if you’re used to playing that way on other racers.  (Most X-box racers use the L and R buttons for gas and brake)  But more so because the A button doesn’t seem to play far enough to get the car up to speed.  On the PS2 version, there doesn’t appear to be a car reset button.  On X-Box, it’s black.  Also the PS2 lacks the ability to call roadblocks, that the X-Box has.  Why is this?  I don’t know, both controllers have the same number of buttons, when it comes down to it.

Some other differences come in HP mode.  On X-Box, this is a set time to bust as many cars as you can.  The cars have a health bar and you keep bashing it till it is gone for arresting.  On PS2, you have to actually stop the cars, and get them in a position where they cannot move.  There are four stops on PS2's Be the cop mode.

On X-Box You get stopped, your busted.  The PS2 has a few tickets first, which makes it much easier to evade the cops.

On X-Box, you can turn on, or off the traffic (except in challenge modes)  On PS2, you have frequencies of traffic, low, medium, and high.  PS2’s low setting matches X-Boxes on setting, the others exceed X-Box.

The “pissed off cop” meter (a meter of stars, that shows how mad the cops are, basically)  There’s 5 stars on X-Box, and 4 on PS2.  Also, it seems to fill up with anything on PS2, and on X-Box it takes awhile.

It seems a little easier over all to drive on PS2 version, as the X-box is more likely to lose control of your car in tight turns.  And many of the tracks are obviously wider on PS2 for some reason (more shoulder to the road)  Though there may be more roadside obstacles on some of the PS2 tracks, such as trees, where they’re on the other side of the fence on X-Box.

Graphics

Your cars are nice and shiny, and look extremely detailed.  In fact, they’re so nice looking, you might be afraid of crashing for fear of all the dents it’ll put into your car.

Here is the nice part of both games.  The “worlds”, (tracks) are huge and highly detailed.  Signs that once could be broken off, but just laid there after that, can now be hit with each run around the track.  Some even affect your car if you hit them, such as picnic tables.  All the tracks feature at least one alternative rout to take, and most feature quiet a few.  There are 12 tracks, and four settings for each (forward, backward, mirrored, and mirrored backwards)  And the designs of the tracks are good enough, it will feel like a totally different track racing it backward or mirrored.

There are some differences in the X-Box and PS2 games as far as graphics go also.

On the PS2, the graphics seem to have a more realistic color.  Also, with faster cars, the PS2 seems to move faster.  But they sacrificed frame rate, which starts to drop down on PS2 at high speeds.  The X-Box moves slightly slower, but the frame rate never drops either.  I think the X-Box is running a slightly higher resolution than the PS2.

The PS2 has a wider selection when it comes to the color you can have your car. There’s some cars on the X-Box that have no color option where the PS2 does.  I believe they both have the same cars in regular mode.  But when it comes to cop cars, the Diablo is missing on PS2.

The PS2 has one more track than X-Box, a desert track (can’t remember the name.

There are also variations on the tracks themselves.  The PS2 has wider tracks, and some of the alternate routs that are dirt on X-Box, are paved on PS2 (now that’s weird)  And because the fence is farther from the road on PS2, some of the trees are inside the fence where you can hit it, unlike on the X-Box.

There are some environmental affects that aren’t on X-Box, while they are on the PS2.  One is that the first track unlocked, on PS2, there is a fire truck putting out a fire, that is absent on X-Box.

Also on PS2, there is an option for overcast (weather affects) that is also absent on X-Box.  And for an odd reason, neither has the option to change the time of day.  What’s with that?

Also, the busted scene is different on X-Box and PS2 on X-Box, when you get busted, there are several videos of your guy, getting busted, or running around.  On PS2, the Videos are B/W "Dash Cam" and shows the cop walk up to give your ticket, or haul your ass to the patrol car.

Sound FX/Music

There is a great deal of songs, from several groups (I’ll get the song names and group up later, but if you want to know, pick up the game, the list is in the book)  So far, everybody I know said their favorite is “Fever for the Flava” by “Hot Action Cop”.  What can I say?  It’s mine too.  On the X-box, if the tunes aren’t good enough for you, then you can opt to use your own soundtrack off your hard drive.

The cars sound like cars, and even sound different depending on the car used.  Some cars have a nice deep throated engine that tells people you’re coming, and others may have a pissy motor that sounds like a Hoover.

The cops have several voices, and will talk to each other, or yell at you.  They have more or less the same sayings on X-Box and PS2, but seem to complain about different things in different proportions on both systems.  On the X-Box, they may say “Some Nut just rear ended me”  While the PS2 version will say “Send the tow truck” for the same situation.

The Helicopter is back again.  This time though, it’s for more than just looks.  They will drop barrels that usually explode when you hit them.  Beware though, they occasionally will drop one that will pop open immediately and drop a spike belt.  The PS2 pulls this trick a lot more than the X-Box version.  That really jacks up the paranoia level, considering on both games, hitting the tire spikes means an automatic arrest.

The PS2 helicopter also drops a flare at you.  The X-Box doesn’t do this at all.  It just flashes, and may cause your car to jump, but is more an annoyance than anything else.

How's it rate?

Left score is X-Box. Right score is PS2

Graphics 4,  5, It’s great looking, but X-Box can do better.
Sound 5, 4.5, Excellent sound track, and if you don’t like it, use your own.
Control 4.5, 5, Easy as falling on yer ass, so if you can’t drive, it’s not the games fault.
Replay Value 5, 5, This game has always been one of the better ones for bringing you back.
Over All 4.25, 4.75  On the X-Box graphics are the only thing that bring the score down,  On PS2, the song doesn’t rotate on the menus, other than that, it’s an excellent game.

Final Thoughts

When does the next NFS game come out on X-Box?  It’s always been my favorite game, ever since the first one on computer You just had to love the videos of the cop busting you.  “Well, it looks like I caught my first UFO.  You better start turning green real fast gizmo, or the National Enquire isn’t going to buy my story”  And another thing.  The X-Box can do so much Better than PS2 in the graphic department.  So, why doesn’t it?  I think that this is the first game that there is no improvements on the X-Box version.  And the color palate actually makes the PS2 look better in that way.
